Changes in the life of a young child

“Helping young children cope with changes, whether hopeful, such as moving to a new house, or a mixed blessing, such as the birth of a sibling, or sad, such as the death of a grandparent requires attention to the same four issues:

  • Knowing the situation.
  • Knowing the family.
  • Knowing the child.
  • Knowing what is known about the experience”

Chapter five – Changes, is by Dr. Kim Masters. Dr. Masters has been a certified child psychiatrist for over 25 years and is the author of the book Angry Child: Sleeping Giant or Paper Tiger.

This chapter guides parents through common changes (both positive and negative) that can affect young children’s lives.

Parents will learn how help their children to become more resilient by adapting to, and coping with a variety of situations such as moving, starting preschool, divorce and death.
